My name is Lonnie Paz. I’m 26 years old and currently a student at the University of Arizona working on my BS in Cognitive Neuroscience.
I’ve been involved in gymnastics, in one form or another, my entire life. As a kid I loved to tumble however I never competed in gymnastics.
I began coaching gymnastics about 4 and a half years ago. I started coaching girls gymnastics in Virginia and when I moved to Tucson I began coaching boys team. I am now head of a local boys program of which my team is one of the top teams in the state.
My favorite skills to do are the iron cross and planche. I enjoy coaching elements on the ring apparatus ranging from swings to strength.
I think it’s important for CrossFitters to practice gymnastics skills in order to build coordination, body and spatial awareness, as well as muscle control. With my gymnastics coaching background, I believe that basic gymnastic elements such as handstands are fundamental in progressing to higher level skills. Most athletes are very rarely satisfied once they achieve their goal and are always trying to better themselves which is why proper technique is so important when learning the basics.
