Athlete of the Month

By Aubrey Deimund | In Uncategorized | on February 2, 2015

Ry Provencio

We chose Ry to be our February Athlete of the Month because he went from coming to CrossFit only when Boxing class was cancelled to being one of our most dedicated and consistent athletes! Congratulations Ry!

How old are you?

40 Years Old

Where did you grow up?

Las Cruces, New Mexico

When did you become a member at CrossFit East Tucson?

July 2014

What type of program or exercise/s were you doing before you tried Crossfit?

Running and Boxing

What is your profession?

I am an Aerospace / Aerodynamic Engineer

What else do you like to do outside of CrossFit East Tucson? (Hobbies and likes)

I play the guitar, I love running and I also love to travel

How did you find out about CrossFit East Tucson?

I joined Platinum and saw people doing CrossFit through the window and thought it looked awesome!

When did you first know that CrossFit is right for you?

I knew I liked it only after a couple of sessions

What is your least favorite WOD or movement and why?

Pistols – because one leg is stronger than the other

What is your favorite WOD or movement?

I don’t think I have a favorite WOD movement. If I had to pick one, I would say the HSPU because when I first started Cross Fit, I couldn’t even get inverted!!!

Brag about yourself.  Since you have been in CFET, we have seen your growth as an athlete. Tell us about your journey.

I initially started with boxing because I wanted to stay active but I was getting bored with just the gym. I also wanted to build strength so I spoke with Adrian about CrossFit. Since joining CrossFit, I have noticed significant improvement in my overall strength and conditioning. I have always been a runner but I don’t think I had a lot of strength. CrossFit has also improved my running and I notice a big difference in my endurance. CrossFit is a great way for me to release stress and energy in a healthy way and continue to personally improve my own personal fitness goals. And……….I can continue to eat Wienerschitzel every now and then too =)

Do you know FRAN? If you do, how do you feel about her and what is your time? If you don’t know her, are you excited to meet her because I heard she is pretty amazing?

Fortunately, I don’t know FRAN and I hope our paths NEVER cross.

What or who motivates you during your WODs?

Other members working out with me motivates me.

What is that one thing you thought you could never do at CFET but succeeded to get it done?

I didn’t think I could ever get the proper form down for most of the movements. When I first started, I felt so awkward at everything I attempted and I just felt like everything I tried I was not getting the hang of. Since I am an engineer, I have a very analytical mind and I try to over analyze things to death. I think this mindset made it more difficult to just relax and have fun. Once I learned to do that, my form started to improve and I slowly began to get the hang of everything……well almost everything.

Tell us something about yourself that not a lot of people know about? The weirder the better.

I lived in Bolivia, South America teaching English and computers and loved it. I now have a family there I am really close to and I try to travel back there every couple of years to South America to visit them.

Do you have any advice for new CrossFitters?

Just have fun and enjoy yourself. It is easy to get intimidated by other members(especially if they have been doing it for a while). There is so much to learn and so many movements and terms that are thrown around that you can feel like you may not catch on. But if you just take your time and remember that, you will eventually get the hang of it and eventually look forward to it.

Who is your favorite CrossFit Athlete?

Camille Leblanc-Bazinet 🙂

If you were stuck in a deserted island, would you take a year supply of coconut water or the Crossfit Athlete of your dreams?

Camille Leblanc of course! Coconut water is Nasty

Describe yourself in one word:

If you had to program a WOD, what would it be?

400m Run
